Safety Play: Better Be Sure Than Sorry

Good bridge players often give the impression that cards favor them most of the time. This, of course, is not true. When a contract appears safe, they will ask themselves what can possibly go wrong and take the necessary precautions as in (a) - (d) below, often sacrificing a trick to ensure the making of their contract.

Paying a premium - safety play to avoid bad breaks
1) Seven card combination:

(i) A x x (ii) A J x x (iii) K J x x (iv) A K J x (v) 9 8 3
K J x x K x x A x x x x x K Q 7 4

The best chance for three tricks is to cash A, K and then lead up to J x. In (v) run the 9 and cover if East plays the J or 10.

2) Eight card combination :

(i)
A J x x
(ii)
K J x x
(iii)
K 9 x
K 9 x x
A 9 x x
A J x x x

Your best chance of losing just one trick is to begin with the high card in the hand that includes the J and lead up to K 9 or A 9. If the opponent ducks, you insert the 9.

3) Nine card combination (exercise): Try this

North You West leads

J
against 6

K 10

A 9 8 7 6 5 4

K wins.

10 6 2

A K 9

A Q 6

K Plan your play.

A 8 7 6 4

K 9
